What Is Demurrage?

Demurrage is a fee charged by the steamship line when an import container sits at the port terminal beyond the allotted free time. Free time typically ranges from 3 to 5 business days after the container is discharged from the vessel. After free time expires, daily demurrage charges accrue — often $150 to $350 per day depending on the line and container size.

What Is Detention?

Detention is a fee charged when you keep the container or chassis beyond the allowed time after it leaves the port. Once you pick up a container, you typically have 4 to 7 days to unload and return the empty. Detention charges accrue daily after that window closes.

What Is Per Diem?

Per diem is a chassis usage fee charged by the chassis provider (pool or leasing company) for each day the chassis is out. It is separate from the steamship line’s demurrage and detention charges. Per-diem rates vary by provider and chassis type.
